Abstract:A two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element model (FEM) is developed to analyze the effects of winding tension on the radial compressibility and turn-to-turn contact behavior of no-insulation (NI) REBCO pancake coils. Frictionless contact boundary conditions are implemented at the turn-to-turn interfaces, and the coupling effect between critical current density and tilting deformation is considered. Based on the computed results, a criterion for evaluating turn-to-turn contact and practical advice for applying winding tension in engineering applications will be proposed.
