Numerical Modeling on Reciprocating Active Magnetic Refrigeration Regenerator in Room Temperature

Abstract:We have constructed a one-dimensional porous media model for an active magnetic regenerator. Based on the comparison of the simulation and experiment, we improved the 1-D model and construct a two-dimensional model of a linear parallel-plate active magnetic regenerator. The 2-D model is solved using a fully implicit (in time and space) discretization of the governing energy equations. The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is taken into account by the inclusion of a source term in the energy equation for the magnetic solid. The solid magnetic material and the regeneration fluid are separately modeled. The adiabatic temperature change of the used gadolinium has been measured and is used as an alternative MCE than mean field modeling. The results from the 2-D model can explain the physical phenomenon which happens in the process of AMR.
